Mary Carey

December 17, 1932 — October 30, 2020

The family of Mary (Coons) Carey sadly announces her death on October 30, 2020.  She passed away at her home near Richwood, Ohio, with family by her side.  She was 87 years old.  She is survived by her husband, Myron (Skip) Carey, a son, Doug Carey, daughters Regina (Carey) Greig and Sandra (Carey) Oakes, and a brother, Jim Coons.  Mary is also survived by 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Mary was born to Ona Fay (Breece) Coons and Herbert H. Coons, in Marion , Ohio.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and brother-in-law, Jane (Coons) Cattell, David Cattell and their daughter Lisa.  A brother, Tom Coons, also preceded her in death.

No funeral service will be held for Mary, at her request, but donations in her memory may be sent to Union County Humane Society.

Mary grew up on the Coons family farm in Union County. She had a lifelong love of animals, especially horses, cats and dogs.  She attended Byhalia High School, and earned a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Special Needs Education from The Ohio State University.  Mary taught at Claibourne Richwood Elementary School for many years.

Mary met her husband 'Skip' through the Byhalia Friends Church, and they attended High School together. They were married when Skip returned home from the Navy, and were married for 65 years.  Mary loved crafting and sewing, which she probably inherited from her mother, Ona Fay. She also loved flower and herb gardening, Country and Rock music, and the comedy of Tim Conway.  Mary was an avid reader, and loved to go fast, whether on a horse or in her car.  A favorite prank that she played on teenage Gas Station Attendants  was to ask them to check the water level in her VW bug. Invariably, they would look 'under the hood' and discover that the engine was not located in the front of the car. And, there's no radiator in a VW!

Heartfelt thanks to Mary's caregiver, Carol, for her kindness and merciful care during her last days, and to the personnel of Heartland Hospice.

“Take a look around, I'm the sunshine in your hair,
I'm the shadow on the ground, I'm the whisper in the wind,
And I'll be there until the end, Can you feel the love that we share?”
